On the latest Ladybird Styling chat…we talked about our closets.
Specifically- Spring cleaning and changing out our clothes for warmer weather. I found some jewels in the conversation about this process that I thought I would pass along.
1. YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO IT ALL AT ONCE
Set a time frame you are comfortable, anything over 2 hours and you are probably not going to do yourself justice. You just want to get it done and may make decisions you regret later. Try for 20 minutes – 45 minutes and concentrate on these aspects.
· Choose from the HEART- If you love an item and wear it often it dosent matter the style, its you. Be authentic. You can layer your favorite clothes no matter the season.
· When did you wear this last and where?- If its been years, donate it so someone else who can make good use of an item that is taking up space and NOT being used by you. If this is a sentimental piece put it somewhere safe, but do not let it take up your daily closet.\
· Does it fit, and feel good? If you are holding onto an item hoping you can get back into it, or you only wear it for a short time because you do not like the feel of it-Donate, get rid of it.
· Vibe? Is this really you or are you keeping it because someone gave it to you and you don’t want to hurt their feelings?-This is YOUR wardrobe. (If whoever gave it to you asks why you never wear it) tell them you gave it to someone who absolutely loved it and you appreciate that you had it to give them.
2. BUY EXTRA’s -
· If there is a core piece you wear regularly and dread the time it is no longer wearable… get 2 or even 3. This is your identity. People come to associate you with this sweater, vest, pants shoes…etc. Wouldn’t it be nice to not have to try and find it later only to find it is no longer available?.
· Buy same item in several colors..
3. DON’T FEAR NOT HAVING ANYTHING TO WEAR
· Whittle down the pieces in you core capsule. Your go-to –pieces
· With less we become more creative with styling. We then try different ways to wear something and learn the value of accessorizing.
· We will not go out naked…. We can as Tim Gunn says “Make it work”
So with the feelings fresh from that call, I am going to attack my closet and try and make more room. I will donate to a local thrift store with both winter and summer things. And I am sure to find some things I forgot I even had.
Wish me luck.- Di
Did you know the dear M. Monroe had a closet with multiples of the same white shirt and black capris? The rest of the time she went buff.
